College Guidance

The Academy of the Sacred Heart offers a comprehensive college counseling program to help guide students and their parents through the complexities of the college search and application process. The goal of the program is for the college counselor to help each student identify her personal gifts and strengths in order to select a college that will serve her needs, enhance growth, and provide a foundation for the future. Students receive assistance in organization of the college search, application and admissions procedures, PSAT and ACT preparation and testing, interviewing techniques and scholarship application. To complete their high school experience, Academy of the Sacred Heart students participate in a two-week full-time career internship program their senior year.

College Guidance 5 Year Plan

Grades 8 and 9

grades 8 and 9

8th and 9th graders meet with the college counselor during scheudled activity periods and group guidance activities beginning in the spring semester. These lessons focus on high school success and age-appropriate college counseling content. 8th and 9th grades are likewise encouraged to start exploring their college options through attending the Sacred Heart College Fair held at school each October. In the spring, 8th and 9th graders will take the PSAT 8/9 during a scheduled in-school test administration. This standardized test serves as a practice exam for upper school students. PSAT 8/9 exam scores are not used for college admission purposes.

Grade 10

10th graders attend the Sacred Heart College Fair in October to start researching their colleges of interest. 10th graders take the PSAT 10 in the spring of their sophomore year during a scheduled school day test administration. PSAT 10 exams are practice exams for the PSAT/NMSQT test that students take in their junior year of high school. These scores are not sent to colleges and are not used for college admission purposes.

College counseling activity period activities are held throughout the school year. These lessons for 10th graders focus on:

Selecting the right courses
Maintaining high school success
Introduction to financial aid for college
Test Prep
Making your college list, etc

Grade 11

11th Graders attend the Sacred Heart College Fair in October and also take the PSAT/NMSQT exam in October during the national PSAT/NMSQT test administration date. Junior students meet with the college counselor during a scheudled activity period before the PSAT/NMSQT exam to go over test policies and procedures for exam day. During the spring semester of their junior year, students begin to meet one on one with the college counselor to begin working on their college applications. A Common App workshop and a College Essay Writing Workshop are held each spring for junior students. A spring test date for the ACT at school is also held for junior students. Junior students are advised to take either the ACT or SAT at least twice before senior year.

Grade 12

Seniors meet one-on-one with the college counselor starting from the firs week of school and continuing through the end of the school year. The college counselor works with each senior to create and individual college application plan that highlights their strengths. Seniors have the option to take the ACT in the fall during a scheduled in-school test date. By the spring, the majority of the senior class has completed their college applications, but they continue to meet with the college counselor for assistance with financial aid forms, housing applications, scheduling college orientation, etc. Seniors also work with the college counselor to plan May Projects, prepare for AP exam administration in May, and to prepare for gaduation.
